Was tossed along that jungle trail There was nothing there, just thorns and nails Had no skin, no fur to wear But I straggled through the storm In a search to find my home
Now I climbed the mountain and I pleaded with the sky There was no one around, just some dark clouds in reply But I offered some berries and a tear in my eye ‘Cause I was on my own So far away from home…home
Chorus: There’s a fire burning inside me Makes the lame walk and the blind to see Here I am wandering on what I should be The old earth, the moon, the sun Some wings to rise the dawn
Now time’s tickin’ like a melancholy friend Ticks the beginning, and the middle and the end But if I close my eyes and just pretend There’s shelter in this song Like a river flowin’ home…home
Interpretation I believe this song, written by Steven Delopoulos, is an interpretation of Jesus last hours on earth. What’s interesting to me is that the song appears to be written from what Delopoulos believes to have been Jesus’ perspective.
I interpret the song’s lyrics to imply that Jesus was weary from the brutal beatings by the Roman solders. The spectators, lining the streets to watch and mock Him, were shoving a staggering Jesus along the way to Golgotha and that’s why Delopoulos used the lyrics “tossed along” in the first line – “tossed along that jungle trail” – “jungle” representing man as a wild, primitive and savage animal.
The reference to “There was nothing there, just thorns and nails” may be a reference to the loneliness that Jesus must have experienced and a foreshadowing of the dreadful deed and impending crucifixion. I believe the lyrics “He had no skin, no fur to wear” is referring to the fact that he was nearly naked and had no water (“skin” – a bag made from animal hide used to hold wine or water). The lyrics, “He struggled through the storm” could refer to the mocking and shouting spectators, the darkness, earthquake or all of the aforementioned. The lyrics “in search of home” may be referring to the event that must be carried out (crucifixion) for Jesus to eliminate separation from God and His natural home.
The lyrics “Now I climbed the mountain and I pleaded with the sky. There was no one around, just some dark clouds in reply” may refer to Golgotha, the hill top where Jesus was crucified and the place where Jesus pleaded “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
This may be a stretch, but the lyrics “But I offered some berries and a tear in my eye” may be referring the blood Jesus shed (berries) or implies sacrifice and the “tear” may referring to Jesus’ forgiving plea “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” In the chorus, Delopoulos refers to Jesus’ supernatural powers (healing the lame and the blind) and His role as our Creator.
The last verse, I believe, is written from the perspective of the writer, Stephen Delopoulos. He is quietly sad that his time in this world is limited, however is warmly comforted, in the fact that for each moment lost on this earth, he moves closer to being in his natural home.
